Ready to actually do it? Save these debts in the app: it tracks each payment, moves the extra to the next debt for you, and keeps your date up to date.
Want a plan that also covers your bills, paychecks and anything past due? Bill & Debt Snowball opens to everyone soon.
How the debt snowball works
You pay the minimum on every debt and put everything extra on the smallest balance. When it's paid off, its payment rolls onto the next one, so each payment grows as you go. The quick early wins are what keep many people going.
The avalanche puts the extra on the highest interest rate instead. It usually costs a little less interest, but the first payoff can take longer. See a worked example in Debt snowball vs. avalanche.
Questions
Is the snowball or the avalanche better?
The avalanche usually costs less interest. The snowball pays off a debt sooner, which keeps many people going. Both are shown side by side above, with your own numbers.
Should I include my mortgage?
Most people leave it out and plan it separately, because it's large and has a low rate. Add it if you want the full picture.
What if I'm behind on a payment?
Catching up what's past due usually comes first, then the snowball. Bill & Debt Snowball's plan does this for you.
Is my information saved or sent anywhere?
Not unless you choose to. The calculator works on this page only, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. If you tap Save this plan, your debts are kept in this browser (not sent to us) until you create an account and choose to add them. A copied link carries the amounts only, never names.
